Education Bio –I really enjoy working at AGWSR because it is like a little family.  The staff at AGWSR is very caring and we are always there for each other.  I grew up in Ackley, going to Ackley-Geneva, and I knew that because of the experiences I had here, that I wanted to be a teacher and raise my only family in a small town.  I was fortunate enough to be able to do that in my hometown.  Being a part of a small school district, like AGWSR, gives our students opportunities to be involved in many different activities to help them grow.

Personal Bio –I have been a high school volleyball coach here at AGWSR for the past 6 years.  I love coaching volleyball and being around the girls that have become part of a little family. I am married to James, who is also a teacher at AGWSR, and we have 3 boys.  My boys keep me very busy running in all directions as they are involved in many different activities all year round.  We have 2 dogs, Max and Lily.   In my free time, I enjoy running in 5K’s, biking, especially during RAGBRAI, and exercising. My favorite sports teams are the Iowa Hawkeyes and UNI Panthers.  My favorite food is pizza.  My favorite TV show is Friends.

In first grade I teach:

Reading- We read a different story out of our reading series book each week and then at the end of the week we take a test over the story.

Spelling- We start our spelling units around Thanksgiving.  The students are given a spelling list each week to practice at school and also at home.  Then we test over the words at the end of the week.

Vowac- Our Vowac series is where we teach students the letter sounds, short vowels, long vowels, vowel teams, digraphs, blends, bossy r and so on.  It helps students to sound out words when reading and writing.

Math-Students learn basic addition/subtraction facts, place value, 2 digit addition, length, time, money, and shapes.

Social Studies-We learn about our world, culture, geography, history, economics, and citizenship.

Science/Health-Students learn about magnets, plants, bees, frogs.
