Ag Classes
Here at AGWSR, we offer various types of agriculture based classes. The varieties seem to please the interests of all of our students. Did you know the first step to be an FFA member is enrolling in an Ag class?
Iowa Agriculture
Term: Year
Grade Level: 9,10,11,12
Prerequisite: None
Description: This is a year-long introductory course on the study of Agriculture in Iowa. Topics to be studied include: soils, leadership opportunities in the FFA, parliamentary procedure, the animal industry, animal evaluation, electricity and a variety of other topics.
Electricity
Term: Semester
Grade Level: 10,11,12
Prerequisite: None
Description: This semester course deals with understanding the fundamentals of electricity with hands-on experiences. Areas of study include, how energy is produced and used, the National Electric code, estimation electrical cost, service entrance panels, wiring diagrams, wire selection, electrical circuit planning, practice wiring laboratories, fuses and circuit breakers, electrical light and heat. It is recommended that students be upperclassmen.
Welding
Term: Semester

Prerequisite: None
Description: This semester course is working mainly with welding processes. The first nine weeks of the course will be focused on learning safety and the theory behind the welding processes. The second nine weeks of the course will be focused on skill development. The students will be assigned tasks in the areas of gas, MIG, and arc welding and practice their technique until they can successfully complete each task.
Ag Mechanics

Description: This full year course is a study of Ag Mechanics. Great time will be spent learning how to develop skills in mechanics such as changing tires, tractor restoration, and advanced welding techniques.
Horticulture
Term: Semester

Description: A course designed for upper level students interested in one of the most rapidly growing areas of Agriculture in America. Horticulture explores the basic principles in cultivation, processing, and sale of fruits, nuts, vegetables, ornamental plants, and flowers. This coarse also explores many different career opportunities, preparing you for a job in this growing field.
Nursery Landscaping
Term: Semester
Grade Level: 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: None
This hands on semester course is broken into to pieces in which both pieces will utilize the school greenhouse. Everyone has a lawn and turf grass will be the focus of this class for nine weeks. Grass selection, establishment and maintenance will be the focus. The class will also have nine weeks of study in the nursery landscape area. Students will learn how to incorporate plants into the landscape. The classes focus will be on perennials, shrubs and trees. The class will have a large outdoor project they plan each year.
Animal Science
Dual Enrolled With Ellsworth Community College
Term: Semester
Grade Level: 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: None
This course is an overview of management and production practices primarily associated with cattle, swine, sheep and equine. Other species such as poultry, dairy and aquaculture will be addressed. Topics will include Nutrition, Reproduction, Management, Marketing, Evaluation, and Health. Industry trends and economics will be covered also.
Agronomy

Description: This is a semester course is a study of Agronomy in Iowa. Great time will be spent learning how to identify weeds and crops. We will also focus on how to evaluate crops for quality, how to complete computations related to agronomy and how to grow crops here in Iowa.
